The University of Maryland's Cross-Disciplinary Master of Science Program in Telecommunications is one of the most exciting and unique academic degree programs in the country, consisting of a multi-disciplinary curriculum as dynamic and diverse as the telecommunications industry itself.

Fresh, innovative and cutting-edge technical courses are combined with management, regulatory and public policy instruction to provide students with all of the skills they need to advance successful telecommunications careers.

The idea is one of a kind: create a telecommunications professional who is technically savvy, business-minded, and acutely in tune with the policy issues that surround an ever-changing industry. Subsequently, our graduates are leading the telecommunications industry into the 21st century, at companies such as MCI Worldcom, Booz-Allen & Hamilton, Hughes Network Systems, Texas Instruments, and at government agencies such as the Federal Communications Commission and the National Security Agency.

The curriculum was carefully developed six years ago under the guidance of industry leaders such as Bell Atlantic, MCI and Digital. Since then, new state-of-the-art classes have been added each year to keep pace with the technological advancements of the telecommunications industry.

The program combines the well-established strengths and faculty of four nationally-renowned colleges at the College Park campus:

  • A. James Clark School of Engineering: Ranked 15th nationally by US News & World Report.

  • Robert H. Smith School of Business: Ranked 28th in BusinessWeek's "Best Business Schools."

  • The College of Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences: The Physics, Math & Computer Science departments each ranked in US News & World Report's top 25.

  • The Maryland School of Public Affairs: Ranked 20th by US News & World Report.

Core coursework includes work in signals and system theory, network design and management, plus current policy and economic factors driving the global industry. In addition, industry leaders offer seminars on current telecommunications issues, balancing the technical, regulatory, managerial and economic factors at work today.

The University of Maryland is located along the thriving Washington-Baltimore corridor, one of the most prosperous and fastest-growing technology areas in the United States (As evidenced by a recent Newsweek study that cited the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area as one of the "Hottest Tech Cities" in the country). The area is home to more than 3,000 high tech companies, while more than half of the nation's internet traffic is carried on the communication lines of local industry. This proximity to such a vibrant region offers students a wealth of opportunities in the telecommunications industry.
