The Student Experience

Meriam Meghirbi

Meriam Meghirbi enrolled in the Master's Program in Telecommunications as a student from Tunisia- a small country located in northern Africa. After living in various countries including Italy , Germany , and Spain, Meriam decided to continue her studies at the University of Maryland , where she also received her degree in electrical engineering. "What attracted me to the program was the combination of business and engineering, as well as the culturally diverse environment it's based in," states Meriam.

After her arrival, Meriam found her favorite aspects to be the one-on-one advising, her classmates, and the unique instruction. "The professors here come with amazing industry experience. They bring that experience to the classroom which translates into a fuller understanding of the telecommunications industry."

Meriam's coursework in the program helped her retrieve an internship with Sprint-Nextel in Virginia, which later developed into a full-time job offer. "After I finish the ededprogram, I went back to Sprint-Nextel as a Technical Project Manager. I loved my internship and I was excited to go back."

According to Meriam, the combination of a university having both a diverse student population, and a large selection of local technology corporations near by, is not easy to find. "Maryland allowed me to meet incredible people from all over the world at school and on the job."

"I would recommend the program to any individual looking for a cross-disciplinary engineering program in a great location," states Meriam. When asked what advice she would give to new students, Meriam remarked, "Take advantage of the area, personally and professionally, get involved in inter and outer school activities, and have fun. Time flies!"

Meriam Meghirbi graduated in 2007 and is now working with Sprint-Nextel.
